Congrats Mike Aroian and Elsewhere

Underground acts often cover well-known songs, hoping to garner some interest in their original material. YouTube is littered with bad takes on the Beatles, U2 and Katy Perry with only a dozen views. But on rare occasions a song connects with fans and racks up thousands of hits.
Local band Elsewhere, which plays the Middle East tomorrow, beat the odds by tallying nearly 120,000 views of a Police cover. No, they didn’t cover “Roxanne,” “Message in a Bottle” or “Every Breath You Take.” The Boston progressive-punk trio tackled “Don’t You Believe Me Baby.” Haven’t heard of it? Not surprising, few have.

Because the Police have such a distinctive sound, Aroian knew he ran the risk of alienating diehards. If you are going to do homage to Sting, Copeland and Summers, you need to be meticulous about your arrangement, instrumentation and production. Elsewhere was — the drums of Mike Levesque are particularly spot on.

Next move: Parlay the success of the video into album and concert ticket sales. Aroian knows the Police connection has generated a lot of the interest. But the online feedback he’s had over just a few months has been encouraging.
“Some people just like the song for what it is and don’t necessarily make a connection to the Police,” he said. “Some give us accolades and encourage us to record original material, not knowing that’s what we primarily do. And then others are rabid in their enthusiasm.
“One fan went through the effort of commenting on our YouTube channel where he would have put the song on (the Police album) ‘Ghost in the Machine’ and why,” he said. “I loved reading that.”

Elsewhere, with Resonate, Sacred Lake, Instant Shawarma, The Maxims, Relapse and Rubyfruit Jungle, at the Middle East, tomorrow. Tickets: $10-$12; mideastoffers.com.
